Respondus LockDown Browser and
Monitor for Test Integrity
To ensure academic integrity in online assessments, WTAMU utilizes Respondus LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor. These tools create a secure testing environment by restricting students' ability to access external resources, copy/paste content, or navigate away from the exam. Respondus Monitor uses webcam and video recording proctoring to verify student identity and monitor for suspicious behavior throughout the test session. Together, these solutions support a fair and credible evaluation process for academic honesty and assessment rigor.
What is Respondus LockDown Browser?
Respondus LockDown Browser is a custom browser that supports test integrity by locking down the testing environment in WTClass.
When a test requires LockDown Browser, students are unable to:
- Copy
- Go to other websites
- Access other applications
- Close a test until it is submitted for grading
- Use standard browser to complete the test
Setting Up the LockDown Browser on Tests in WTClass
- Ensure that the LockDown Browser is enabled in your course. See directions below:
- In your course, go to Settings in your course navigation.
- Select the tab called Navigation.
- In the “Drag items here to hide from students” section, find LockDown Browser.
- Click the three dots to the right of the LockDown Browser tool and select “Enable.”
- Go to the bottom left of the page and select “Save.”
- Follow the Preparing a Quiz directions

- IMPORTANT: After you copy a course that uses LockDown Browser, you must sync the LockDown Browser tool with the newly-copied course. Create the sync by clicking on the LockDown Browser tool, called "LockDown Browser," in the course navigation of the newly-copied course. You must do this at least one time before your first LockDown Browser exam will be available in your course.
Using Video Monitoring in a Test in WTClass
Respondus Monitor is a webcam feature option for LockDown Browser that records students during online, non-proctored tests.
During a test, Respondus Monitor:
- Records the student using their webcam and microphone during test
- Requires students to show their ID to verify their identity
- Creates a recording that Instructors can review after the test is completed
The Student Experience
New Quizzes:
Students will start by going directly to WTClass in a normal browser. When students open a test that requires the LockDown Browser, the Respondus LockDown Browser will either automatically launch (if has been downloaded previously), or students will be prompted to download and install the browser before launching the LockDown Browser and accessing the exam.
Classic Quizzes:
Students will start by opening the "LockDown Browser" on their computer. Then students will log into WTClass, navigate to the course, and access the test requiring the LockDown Browser.
NOTE: There is no fee for students to use Respondus LockDown Browser or Monitor.
Preparing Students
Create a practice LockDown Browser test. Help students get familiar with the browser and the process by asking them to complete a practice LockDown browser test. Require students take the test prior to a “real” test in the course. Make it a simple quiz with just a few easy questions with a few answer choices. Allow it to have unlimited attempts.
Add a LockDown browser statement to your syllabus. Add a statement in your syllabus to explain that students must use the LockDown Browser for some/all tests in your course.
Be familiar with the student experience. Review the Quick Student Guide for using the LockDown Browser for New Quizzes or
Classic Quizzes.
